Gen Z, even more than generations of the past, is struggling to fit into the modern workplace. A generation built on the internet and formed through COVID certainly find themselves with unique perspectives. It’s important then for employers to accommodate these perspectives, at least to an extent. Here are four ways as an employer to get Gen Z in the workplace and more importantly to stay there.
First is the importance of clear expectations. Gen Z has dealt with layoffs more than most generations, especially through events like COVID. Developing a clear understanding of what’s expected helps to secure each employee in the long term. This also goes along with the second point of transparency. What is to be expected must be clear, but also what is to be gained. Discussions around salary and benefits must be upfront and direct.
Third is the simple incorporation of cooperative respect. Members of Gen Z want to be treated as equals and prefer collaborative work. This can be shown through communication, but also through a consideration of factors like work-life balance and mental health. And the fourth point is to foster genuine connections. Members of Gen Z, when entering a workplace, want to be close to their coworkers and employers alike.
Of course this won’t apply to each and every employee. As a general rule these points are overall changes to foster to account for changing trends. The important thing to remember is the power of Gen Z. By 2030 they’ll make up 30% of the workforce, with more college education than generations past. It’s up to employers today to learn to make use of the generation while they still can.
