From Chaos to Calm: How a Morning Routine Can Change Your Lifestyle

The very first moment you open your eyes can have an impact on how your day is going to go. Do you see the clock and instantly begin to panic and rush about? Do you hit the snooze button until the very last second, leaving yourself just enough time to get out the door? Do you wake up and scroll through your social media pages, emails, and text messages?

Chaos should have no place in your morning. It is time to replace the chaos with calm and develop a morning routine that can change your life.

Benefits of a Positive Morning Routine

Choosing to create a positive morning routine can come with some incredible benefits, including:

  • An increase in your productivity levels – not only in the morning but throughout your day
  • Improved mood
  • Feel more in control of your day
  • Decreased levels of stress
  • A greater sense of well–being
  • Being more organized
  • Getting better quality sleep
  • An increase in confidence

Why not give it a try and see what happens when you leave the crazy mornings in the past and become intentional about how you spend the time after you first wake up?

Choosing Your Morning Routine

We could give you step-by-step instructions for creating the perfect morning routine. But, if we are being realistic, your idea of perfect is going to look different from ours and from every other person’s perfect. We are all different, unique individuals who long for a morning routine that will change our lives. So, what goes into that routine is going to have to be personally chosen.

Below are a few ideas that, when combined, can create a calming and serene morning routine. You choose those that work for you.

Drink water. When your alarm goes off, instead of hitting the snooze button, make drinking a glass of water the first thing you do. This is much healthier for you.

Meditate. Breathing exercises and meditation are other great ways to invite peace and serenity into your life early in the morning. This does not have to be formal or difficult, simply try taking ten deep breaths when you wake up – and before you get out of bed in the morning.

Get outdoors. Whether it is going for a walk, reading a book, or sipping some tea or coffee, find a way to get outdoors in the morning. You will get your dose of vitamin D as the sunshine wakes you up. Placing your bare feet on the earth is great for grounding, too.

Eat breakfast. What we mean is eat a healthy breakfast. You never want to skip over breakfast, but you don’t want to fill your body with all the pre-packaged junk either. You want to nourish it. Stick to whole foods first thing in the morning, such as nuts, fruits, smoothies, oats, etc.

Journaling and reflecting. Having time to journal or reflect – maybe even write a gratitude list – is a great way to start your day by being mindful and present.

Reading. Spending time reading can get your mind going and, depending on what you are reading, it could make you feel empowered, too.

Plan your day. Going over your calendar, your to-do list, your goals, your priorities, etc. can help to set you up for success. You will be more organized heading into your day and are sure to get more done.

Get moving. Working out in the morning can seriously jump-start your day. The blood starts flowing and your energy levels will soar. Choose a physical activity you enjoy and have fun with it.

Making Your Morning Routine a Habit

Once you select the things you want your morning to be composed of, it is time to put them together and make your daily routine. And, as with any type of habit or routine, you have to be consistent to make it stick.

Wake up at the same time every single day of the week and follow through with your routine. This will help to regulate your body so that the early rising becomes natural.

When you enjoy what you are doing and it feels right, you will quickly find yourself looking forward to daybreak.
