Gateway to Higher Education

Preparing for the success of students starts with the completion of the right courses. Gateway courses can set a student up for success and help prepare them for their future. When these courses are offered to students along with provided support, statistics show students are successful. These programs are focused on the students and helping them achieve their goals and accelerate to success. When a student completes a gateway course in english or math they are more likely to continue their education

Gateway courses in English and math are offered in both community colleges and universities. Of these students 45% of those who complete both courses graduate in three years. One big focus for these programs is setting the students up for success in their first year. The first year of college is important for retention. Through the success of the gateway course program the state of Kentucky can work towards closing the equity gap in higher education. In the state there is a gap in the success of those in higher education based on race, income, and age.

To make this possible these courses are run by faculty that put the students first. Faculty teaches in a way that includes social justice and focuses on culturally responsive teaching. Faculty also focuses on being present with their students with just-in-time teaching. This model of teaching focuses on being there every step of the way for the students. Through support at every level gateway courses and faculty can help students reach their potential.
