Is Artificial Intelligence Intelligent Enough?

Recently, AI has become the talk of the town for how revolutionary it can be. However, a large portion of this merit is for value in the future rather than the abilities of today’s AI. Namely, AI’s image recognition is incredibly deficient in both object recognition and facial recognition. The poor capability has made it impossible for AI to be used in any form for self-driving cars. Most notably missing are the ‘human elements’ of intelligence. Skills like creativity, empathy, the ability to judge, desire to collaborate, and a will to act are also void within AI technology in this state. Consequently, AI needs humans and is far off from being considered true ‘intelligence’. However, the AI development efforts have done anything but stagnate. With AI seeing significant improvements in a constant and consistent manner, it is likely that it will see advancements in image recognition very soon. But to solve the systemic issues that exist on a conceptual level, there will need to be major breakthroughs in the technology to see changes. Thankfully, the influx of both commercial and venture capitalist attention ensures the funding for such technology will not be neglected. With companies adopting AI in its current state, its likely revolutionary growth in AI as soon as humanly possible.
