COOs are critical to the smooth functioning of a company. They provide support to the CEO, stepping in when the CEO is overwhelmed or not getting enough done. Over 40% of the world’s leading companies have a COO. However, many COOs struggle to truly fulfill their role due to a variety of challenges.
First, many COOs lack a standard job description or title, leaving them confused about the details of their job. When combined with immense pressure, this can make COOs focus on the wrong things; in fact, many COOs spend ⅔ of their time on employee and operational priorities, rather than long-term strategic planning. This can result in inefficiency.
Other challenges abound. For instance, COOs have to deal with worker shortages and supply chain disruptions. This can delay important tasks, especially when COOs lack sufficient training. Additionally, COOs face internal challenges such as information silos, changes to the vision and priorities, and unengaged teams.
Old tools are no longer enough for COOs to thrive. Instead, modern solutions are necessary. Companies should empower their employees with upskilling, whether it be through coaching or peer groups. These tools can be incredibly useful. For example, coaching can provide a return on investment of up to 788%.
Despite numerous challenges, COOs are valuable and need the proper training and tools to reach their full potential. Dedicating sufficient support to COOs will benefit companies in the long run, and should be a top priority.
